Anti 70 kDa heat shock protein antibodies in sera of patients affected by autoimmune and non-autoimmune thyroid diseases.

Abstract: Twenty eight patients (25F, 3M) affected by autoimmune and non-autoimmune thyroid diseases were studied. HSP 70 antibodies were present in 21.4% of patients. Five of them were affected by Graves' disease and one by De Quervain's thyroiditis. The HSP 70 antibodies mean values of patients were significantly higher than the normals (p < 0.05). This datum was confirmed by Western blotting. The presence of HSP 70 antibodies in the sera of those patients may support the link between the protein and the thyroid autoi… Show more

“…T-cell reactivity against hsp60 present on Salmonella typhimurium is thought to cause reactive arthritis because of crossreactivity (173). A link with thyroid autoimmunity may be suggested by the observation that Graves' disease patients have higher levels of anti-hsp72 antibodies than controls (87,174). Another explanation linking autoimmunity to bacterial infections is the release of sequestered antigens by local infection and inflammation (175).…”

“…Cellular levels of HSP-90 and HSP-70 in the thyroid gland are known to be linked to homeostasis (Wallin et al, 1992) and levels of cytotoxicity in certain glandular pathologies (Samadi et al, 2009; Paggi et al, 1995). These proteins may be biomarkers for detecting toxicity or environmental stress that affects normal thyroid tissue functioning.…”
