Anti‐aging and filling efficacy of six types hyaluronic acid based dermo‐cosmetic treatment: double blind, randomized clinical trial of efficacy and safety

Abstract: BackgroundHuman skin aging is a multifactorial and complex biological process affecting the different skin constituents. Even if the skin aging mechanism is not yet fully unravelled is evident that epidermis loses the principal molecule responsible for binding and retaining water molecules, resulting in loss of skin moisture and accounting for some of the most striking alterations of the aged skin.ObjectivesThis Study investigated the cosmetic filling efficacy of Fillerina® in decreasing the skin aging signs a… Show more

“…Wrinkles are frequently treated by the injection of HA fillers, but this procedure is invasive, painful, and often accompanied by side effects (Chiang, Pierone, & Al‐Niaimi, ). Although topical creams containing HA have also been developed to treat wrinkles (Nobile, Buonocore, Michelotti, & Marzatico, ), their efficacy is limited by their relative difficulty in penetrating the stratum corneum. By contrast, biodegradable microneedle patch may be able to safely and easily deliver HA through the stratum corneum.…”

“…4). As skin aging is predominantly a result of extracellular matrix reduction, of which, HA is one of the most important components, the decline of hyaluronan content is a sign of skin aging (24). Notably, fibroblasts are the primary generators of HA (8).…”

“…HAbased cosmetics such as Fillerina® (Labo Cosprophar Suisse) claims to restore skin hydration and elasticity: this is reported to exert an antiwrinkle effect, although no rigorous scientific proof is able to fully substantiate this claim [82,141,244]. It has to be considered that HA hydrating effect largely depends on its MW, and its longevity depends on HA stability to hyaluronidases.…”

“…Indeed, HMW HA mainly works as a film forming polymer: it reduces water evaporation, with an occlusive-like action. On the other hand, medium MW and LMW-HA mainly work by binding moisture from the environment, do to their high hygroscopicity [141,244]. In some cases this capacity may reverse HA expected hydrating activity as at high concentration HA may even extract humidity from the skyn.…”
