Anti-Arthritic Effect of Chebulanin on Collagen-Induced Arthritis in Mice

Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic degenerative autoimmune disease characterized by persistent inflammation of synovial membranes, which leads to cartilage destruction and bone erosion. To date, there are no effective therapies to slow the progress of this degenerative condition. Here, we evaluate the anti-arthritic effect of chebulanin, an abundant anti-inflammatory agent isolated from Terminalia chebula, in collagen induced arthritis in DBA/1 mice by intragastric administration. Arthritic severity was scored … Show more

“…Cells were maintained in a humidified atmosphere of 5% CO 2 at 37°C. M5 cocktail (interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-17A, IL-22, Oncostatin M and TNFα, each at 10 ng/ml) was used to induce psoriasis-like inflammation in HaCaT cells [16,21]. Cells were incubated with 10 μg/ml TC for 2 h and then exposed to M5 for 2 days with the presence of TC.…”

“…Joint inflammation is the dominant clinical manifestation in RA. Chebulanin, kinsenoside, and triptolide effectively suppress the expression of inflammatory mediators in the joint (Hsiao, Hsieh, Wu, Lin, & Lin, ; Lin et al, ; Zhao et al, ). In addition to the effects of the chemical constituents on the whole joint, they also have specific anti‐inflammatory effects on certain compartments of the joint.…”

“…Gautam et al [42] showed curative effect of T. chebula extract on acetic acid-induced experimental colitis and indicated the presence of active principles with proven antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and free radical scavenging and healing properties in the extract. Recently Zhao et al [72] showed that chebulanin, isolated from T. chebula suppresses the expression of inflammatory mediators and prevents cartilage destruction and bone erosion in mice. Therefore, authors concluded that chebulanin is a strong therapeutic alternative for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.…”
