Anti-Helicobacter Pylori, Anti-Thyroid Peroxidase, Anti-Thyroglobulin and Anti-Gastric Parietal Cells Antibodies in Czech Population

Abstract: Autoimmune thyropathies are frequently linked to many infections, such as Helicobacter pylori, which are also supposed to play a role in their pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationships between thyroid and gastric autoimmunity and H. pylori infection on a large sample of Czech population (n=1621) by monitoring the autoantibodies against thyroglobulin (anti-Tg) and thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) and gastric parietal cell (anti-GPC, representing thyrogastric syndrome) in correlation wit… Show more

“…The pathogenic link could be that intestinal motor dysfunction associated with hypothyroidism reduces ability of the small bowel to clear luminal bacteria [31,32]. Results of the present study are close to a study performed by Hamad et al, [13] in Egypt who found a significant correlation between H. pylori infection and hypothyroidism, and the study in Czech Republic by Sterzl et al, [33] who found an association between H. pylori infection and autoimmune thyroid diseases ( ATD). Adversely, Tomasi et al, [34] in Italy found that there was no association between H. pylori infection and autoimmune thyroid diseases (ATD) , as well as Bassi et al, [35] in Italy who detected a high significant increase in the H. pylori prevalence in the Graves' diseases patients (hyperthyroidism ) and Bassi et al, [36]…”

“…Reinforcing our results, although the hypothesis that the link between H. pylori infection and thyroid autoimmunity has been attributed to cross-reactivity between antibodies against H. pylori and thyroid constituents, we did not observe differences in the ATPO, anti-Tg, and TRAb levels between the H. pylori -positive and -negative children. In a study of the Czech general population ( 13 ), the authors observed that persons older than 18 years showed a higher occurrence of antibodies against H. pylori and of ATPO, which was not confirmed in the age group younger than 18 years. The lack of association of antibodies with anti-thyroid levels and H. pylori infection in children may be due to the fact that it may require a longer time of infection to significantly increase the levels of the autoantibodies.…”

“…Of note, serological detection of H. pylori antibodies is not useful to discriminate between past and ongoing infections. 13 C-UBT, in addition to the stool antigen test, is currently considered the preferred non-invasive method to detect H. pylori infection (16,24). 13 C-UBT, besides being validated for Brazilian children, is highly sensitive and specific for the detection of H. pylori in children of all ages (16,24).…”
