Anti-hepatotoxic activities of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. in animal model of streptozotocin diabetes-induced liver damage

Abstract: BackgroundFlavonoid-rich aqueous fraction of methanolic extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx was evaluated for its anti-hepatotoxic activities in streptozotocin-induced diabetic Wistar rats.MethodsDiabetes Mellitus was induced in Wistar rats by a single i.p injection of 80 mg/kg b.w. streptozotocin (STZ) dissolved in 0.1 M citrate buffer (pH 6.3).ResultsThe ameliorative effects of the extract on STZ-diabetes induced liver damage was evident from the histopathological analysis and the biochemical parameters eva… Show more

“…For example, Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (Roselle; Malvaceae), which is known to contain several antioxidants such as protocatechuic acid (PCA) and anthocyanins, has potential as an ethnomedical remedy for diabetes, jaundiced liver, hypertension, obesity and urinary dysfunctions. These effects have been confirmed in humans and experimental animals (19). Recent studies have demonstrated that H. sabdariffa L. extract (HSE) exhibits antioxidant, antidiabetic, antibacterial, antihypertensive, antiproliferative, anticholesterol, nephroprotective, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective and renal-diuretic activities (20,21).…”

“…It was observed that a vegetable like cactus ( Opuntia ficus‐indica ) could reestablish hematological parameters, decrease lipid peroxidation, and restore enzyme activities in rat liver injured by methotrexate, a chemotherapy medication used to treat cancer (Akacha, Rebai, Amri, & Zourgui, ). In counteracting the liver injury caused by streptozotocin, antioxidant activity was demonstrated in Hibiscus sabdariffa L. extract, as well as spent mushroom compost polysaccharide and its hydrolysates, leading to the improved parameters and liver function as well as lowered blood lipids (Adeyemi, Ukwenya, Obuotor, & Adewole, ; Liu et al., ). In another rat model, whole grain of Kamut khorasan wheat ameliorated doxorteubicin‐induced oxidative damage in the liver (Akacha et al., ).…”
