Anti-HIV-1 Activities of Aerial Parts of Ocimum basilicum and its Parasite Cuscuta campestris

Abstract: Objectives: The present investigation was carried out to test anti-HIV-1 activity of pure compounds isolated from aerial part extracts of Ocimum basilicum and its parasite Cuscuta campestris. Materials:The anti-HIV-1 activity of these extracts was performed by use of real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay and high pure viral nucleic acid kit. Results:The most active fractions were detected by NMR as eugenol and eugenol epoxide respectively in Ocimum basilicum and Cuscuta campestris. The apparent effec… Show more

“…It produces a number of antiviral bioactive compounds, such as ursolic acid, eugenol, 1,8-cineole, and rosmarinic acid which exhibit potential to inhibit HSV-I and II ( Caamal-Herrera et al, 2016 ). O. basilicum , known as sweet basil, contains 1,8-cineole, camphor, thymol, eugenol, eugenol epoxide, apigenin, linalool, and ursolic acid which have been reported to work against HIV-I, HSV, ADV-3, 8, 11, HVB, EV, and CVB-I ( Behbahani et al, 2013 ; Kubiça et al, 2014 ; Tshilanda et al, 2020 ). O. gratissimum is an aromatic herb which is commonly known as African basil.…”

“…Eugenol is a volatile compound that varies from colorless to light yellow, has low water solubility (approximately 2460 mg/L at 25 °C), a strong odor, and an intense flavor. Among the reported biological activities of eugenol is insecticide activity, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, antiviral, antioxidant, and anticancer [7,8,[14][15][16][17][18].…”

“…Eugenol has also been studied as a possible inhibitor of the initial stage of infection by the HIV-1 virus because it can reduce virus replication. Likewise, eugenol can increase lymphocyte production; therefore, the lymphocyte proliferation capacity of eugenol may be responsible for anti-HIV-1 activity [16].…”
