Anti-Inflammatory Active Polyacetylenes fromBidens campylotheca

Abstract: The n-hexane extract of Bidens campylotheca Schultz Bip. ssp campylotheca (Compositae) showed significant in vitro inhibition of cyclooxygenase (CO) and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO). Five polyacetylenes, heptadeca-2E,8E,10E,16-tetraene-4,6-diyne (1), heptadeca-2E,8Z,10E,16-tetraene-4,6-diyne (2), heptadeca-2E,8E,16-triene-4,6-diyne-10-ol (3), safynol (5) and, as a new compound, safynol-2-O-isobutyrate (4) could be isolated and their structures elucidated mainly by UV, MS, NMR, and COSY-NMR. The isolated compounds exh… Show more

“…All parts of B. pilosa plant, the whole plant, the aerial parts (leaves, flowers, seeds, and stems), and/or the roots, fresh or dried, are used as ingredients in folk medicines. Dry powder, decoction, maceration, and tincture are usual formulations for its internal as well as external use [19]. B. pilosa can be used alone or together with other medicinal herbs.…”

“…Derivatives containing more than one acetylene group, such as heptadeca-2E,8E,10E,16-tetraene-4,6-diyne, heptadeca-2E,8Z,10E,16-tetraene-4,6-diyne, heptadeca-2E,8E,16-triene-4,6-diyne-10-ol, and safynol from Bidens campylotheca Schultz Bip. ssp campylotheca (Compositae) [194], or 11(S),16(R)-dihydroxy-octadeca-9Z,17-diene-12,14-diyn-1-yl acetate from Angelica pubescens f. biserrata [52] are more efficient. Potent derivatives are cis-hexadec-11-ene-7,9-diynoic acid 108 and cis-octadec-12-ene-7,9-diynoic acid 109 [195], falcarindol 110 and panaxynol 111 from Saposhnikoviae [52], [196] that block 5-LO product synthesis with IC 50 values of 2 ± 10 mM.…”

“…The interest in the phytochemical study of the species belonging to the genus Bidens (Astereaceae) derives from the fact that several of them, particularly those widely used in popular medicine, have been reported to have significant pharmacological and therapeutics properties [1][2][3][4]. Bidens subalternans D.C., popularly known as "amor seco" is an annual herb widely distributed in the northern and central parts of Argentina.…”
