Anti-inflammatory Activities of Taxifolin from Opuntia humifusa in Lipopolysaccharide Stimulated RAW 264.7 Murine Macrophages

Abstract: This study was performed to investigate the antiinflammatory activities of taxifolin from Opuntia humifusa. A potent anti-oxidant activity was shown from the leaf extract at IC 50 value of 38.33±1.07 µg/mL and fruit extract at IC 50 value of 40.23±2.21 µg/mL by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl assay. Fraction of taxifolin from leaf extract identified using high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The results of cell viability indicated that taxifolin did not show cytotoxici… Show more

“…Amiloxate is a derivative of cinnamic acid which is known to have anti-inflammatory properties [ 111 ]. Abyssinone IV and pinobanksin 3-(E)-caffeate were also found to be structurally similar to taxifolin, a compound known to be an anti-inflammatory agent [ 112 , 113 ] with similarity indexes of 0.749 and 0.767, respectively. Abyssinone IV also has similarities to hesperetin (SI: 0.805).…”

“…Measurements of taxifolin content, an indicator of Superhongmi bran extracts, are shown in Table 1. Taxifolin is a type of flavonoid compound, recognized as a physiological active ingredient due to effects such as strong antioxidant activity, anti-diabetes, and inhibition of blood glucose (Ryu, 2018; Kim et al, 2015). Superhongmi bran extracts contain 58.85 mg taxifolin per 100 g dried weight, however taxifolin is not detected in brown rice extracts.…”

“…Taxifolin has great therapeutic potential for many major inflammatory diseases55, 56 and showed significant ( p < 0.05) reduction in pain when applied topically to painful knee joint, shoulder, calf, hip, lower and upper back 57 . It inhibits Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 production 58 ; an indication that taxifolin has a significant anti-inflammatory effect. Similarly, taxifolin is also known to enhance its anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting LPS-induced production of nitrite oxide 59 .…”
