Anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic activity of Ipomoea imperati (Vahl) Griseb (Convolvulaceae)

Abstract: Ipomoea imperati (Convolvulaceae) lives on the sandy shores of the Brazilian coast and in other areas of the world. The anti-inflammatory activity of a methanol-water extract of the leaves of I. imperati was investigated in experimental models of acute and subchronic inflammation. Topical application of the extract (10 mg/ear) inhibited mouse ear edema induced by croton oil (89.0 ± 1.3% by the lipid fraction with an IC 50 of 3.97 mg/ear and 57.0 ± 1.3% by the aqueous fraction with an IC 50 of 3.5 mg/ear) and a… Show more

“…This extract also presented antispasmodic activity on the isolated ileum, inhibiting histamine and acetylcholine. In the acute toxicity assay, 1 mg/kg of I. imperati methanol-water extract caused no mortality in mice after 24 h (Paula et al, 2003). Ipomoea imperati prevented the formation of gastric lesions in 78% (p<0.05) when compared with the negative control tween 80 (Miyahara et al, 2011).…”

“…Therefore, nowadays various folk medicines in single, or in combination are used to treat diverse types of inflammatory and arthritic ailments (Paula et al, 2003). Medicines derived from raw materials of plants are also getting popularity due to the belief that "Green medicine" is secure with fewer side effects than the synthetic drugs (Parekh & Chanda, 2007).…”

“…I. imperati had a significant inhibitory activity against phospolipase A2 enzyme from bee venom (Paula et al, 2003). Souza et al (2000) related that other species of the Convolvulaceae family, such as Ipomoea pes-caprae, has showed an antinociceptive effect against two classical models of pain in mice.…”
