Anti-Inflammatory and Gastroprotective Effects of Escin

Abstract: Escin is a triterpenoid saponin extracted from the fruit of Aesculus wilsonii Rehd. and Aesculus hippocastanum (Hippocastanaceae). Clinically, it is widely used in the treatment of edema induced by either trauma or surgery, as well as treating chronic venous insufficiency. The anti-inflammatory and antiedema effects of escin have been extensively investigated. This article systematically reviews the effects of escin on inflammation and gastrointestinal diseases, including its role in inflammation, as an antiox… Show more

“…Its local reactions include pain, oedema and loss of function, which may be partial or complete, while the increase in neutrophil level and fever are considered systemic responses. 1 Since ancient times, medicinal plants have been used immensely to treat many diseases. Plants possess the ability to form secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, proteins, alkaloids, phenolic substances, and steroids, making them integral in the treatment of many diseases.…”

“…Triterpenoid saponins and flavonoids are regarded as the major constituents responsible for the pharmacological activity of the genus Aesculus 5 . Escin, a mixture of triterpenoid saponins, 5 demonstrate a wide range of biological applications and potential medicinal values, such as anti‐inflammation, 8,9 antioxidant, 10 anti‐cancer, 11 gastrointestinal protection, 12 neuroprotection 13 and so on 14 . Moreover, flavonoids are natural phytochemicals that act via antiviral, 15 antioxidant 16 and inhibitory activities 17 .…”
