Anti‐Mitotic Spindle Apparatus Antoantibodies: Prevalence and Disease Association in Chinese Population

Abstract: Anti-MSA antibodies have a low prevalence and female gender predominance. Anti-MSA antibodies are primarily associated with CTDs, mainly SS, RA, and SLE. The presence of anti-MSA antibodies might be the unique serological markers of the CTDs, especially when anti-SSA, SSB, and dsDNA antibodies are negative, or the level of RF is low.

“…We found a prevalence of 0.46% for the NuMA pattern compared with 0.047% in a Chinese study [ 24 ] and 0.77% in a European cohort, [ 3 ] indicating evident geographical and racial/ethnic variations, as shown for other ANA patterns. [ 25 , 26 ]…”

“…One of the main molecular targets of anti-MSA antibodies, a rare type of anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA), is KIF11, also known as HsEg5. Anti-MSA antibodies have been reported in connective tissue diseases, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but also in vasculitis [30][31][32]. While the MSA pattern is usually rare, sometimes it represents the only serological marker for patients that are negative for other types of ANA [33].…”

“…Similarly, Xi et al reported that MSA-recognizing autoantibodies were predominantly coupled with CTD, mostly SS, RA, and SLE. 75 The RNP-associated patterns could be indicative of undifferentiated CTD. 74 Results of another study showed that the NuMA pattern was positive in patients with neurofibromatosis and small vessel vasculitis.…”
