Anti-SARS-CoV-2 Activity of Polysaccharides Extracted from Halymenia floresii and Solieria chordalis (Rhodophyta)

Abstract: Even after hundreds of clinical trials, the search for new antivirals to treat COVID-19 is still relevant. Carrageenans are seaweed sulfated polysaccharides displaying antiviral activity against a wide range of respiratory viruses. The objective of this work was to study the antiviral properties of Halymenia floresii and Solieria chordalis carrageenans against SARS-CoV-2. Six polysaccharide fractions obtained from H. floresii and S. chordalis by Enzyme-Assisted Extraction (EAE) or Hot Water Extraction (HWE) we… Show more

“… 47 , 48 The impact of algal polysaccharides, including carrageenan, on SARS-CoV-2 infection has been investigated, including in clinical trials. 49 51 Treatment with the sulfated polysaccharides appears to provide a barrier to impair viral uptake and thereby reduce intracellular viral proliferation. 52 Interestingly, in 8-week-old C57BL/6J male mice exposed to oral carrageenan in their diet for 60 d, lung tissue showed significant increases in phospho-p38 MAPK (Fig.…”
