Anti-ulcer effect of extract of rhizome of Curcuma longa. L against aspirin-induced peptic ulcer in rats

Abstract: Background: Rhizome of Curcuma longa has many therapeutic implications in traditional Indian medicine. It is used in traditional medicine for flatulence, dyspepsia, and other gastric problems. There is conflicting reports regarding its antiulcer and ulcerogenic potential. Aims and Objectives: The study is with the aim of determining the gastoprotective effect of C. longa extract on aspirin-induced gastric ulcer in rats. Materials and Methods: C. longa rhizomes were collected locally. Preparation of extract was… Show more

“…23 In albino rats, the C. longa ethanolic extract (250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg) prevented edema and showed antiinflammatory activity of 1000 mg/kg dose comparable to the effect of aspirin. 44 In the CIA of the ankle joints in rats, C. longa (30,60, and 110 mg/kg) decreased arthritic score dose-dependently along with a significant effect on the reduction of erythema. The bone erosion was controlled, and osteophyte formation did not occur by C. longa at doses of 60 and 110 mg/kg.…”

“…Inflammatory cell infiltration in the lamina propria and submucosa of aspirin-induced ulcer might be related to loss of integrity of the intercellular junctions, disturbance of the protective mucus barrier and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) with subsequent bacterial invasion which leads to excessive leukocyte infiltration inside the gastric epithelial linings by the activation of interleukin pathway [55,56] .…”

“…Since there are contradicting reports on the safety of consuming turmeric powder in large quantity and the exact concentration of turmeric rhizome powder in diet that could have deleterious effect has not been popularly documented, it is very important therefore to elucidate those contradicting reports [12]. It is also essential to obtain additional scientific proof to justify that the consumption of TRP could enhance gastric mucosa, hepatic and renal preservation.…”
