Antibacterial and Antifungal Activities of Volatile Oils fromZanthoxylum Rhoifolium. Leaves

Abstract: The volatile oil extracted from Zanthoxylum rhoifolium Lam (Rutaceae) leaves was tested to verify its antimicrobial activity efficacy against six types of different highvirulent Gram-negative bacteria isolated from clinical material and against three different types of fungi (two yeast and a filamentous one). Some results were different from those observed in the literature, and these differences might have occurred due to seasonal, geographic, or nutritional variations of the plants. Nevertheless, the volatil… Show more

“…The tested solutions of aqueous extract (AE), soluble fraction of ethyl acetate (SEA), non-soluble fraction of ethyl acetate (NSAE) and bergenin (Berg) were obtained by serial two-fold dilutions in DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) of an initial sample at 5.0 mg/mL. The positive control was prepared using antibiotic solutions at 1.0 mg/mL of chloramphenicol (Chl) and streptomycin (Stp) for bacteria and miconazole (Mz) for fungi (Da Silva et al, 2006. Pure DMSO was used as the negative control.…”

“…Zingiber officinale is used in breathing problem, coughs (Rahmatullah et al, 2010a); Rabies, pneumonia, stomach ache, chicken pox, dyspepsia (Rahmatullah et al, 2010b); Arthritis, gout (Rahmatullah et al, 2010c). The genus Zanthoxylum has a great importance due to its ethnic-botanics, phyto-chemistry and biological activity, and it remains a promising source of various secondary metabolites including benzophenanthridine alkaloids (Yang, 2008;Da Silva et al, 2006).…”
