Antibacterial and antioxidant activities of Musa sp. leaf extracts against multidrug resistant clinical pathogens causing nosocomial infection

Abstract: The present study concluded that among the different Musa species, Musa paradisiaca displayed efficient antibacterial activity followed by Musa acuminata against multi-drug resistant nosocomial infection causing pathogens. Further, an extensive study is needed to identify the bioactive compounds, mode of action and toxic effect in vivo of Musa sp.

“…To treat these microbial infections, various antimicrobial drugs have been discovered. Due to the indiscriminate use of these commercial antimicrobial drugs, resistance to these drugs by microorganisms has been developed and increased day by day (Davis, 1994;Ahamad, 1998;Karuppiah and Mustaffa, 2013). The number of resistant microorganisms to these antimicrobial agents is increases exponentially.…”

“…Plants have been used from ancient time to cure diseases and illnesses and even in the prevention and treatment for bio ilm related infections due to presence of naturally occurring phytochemical compounds (Liziana et al, 2013;Karuppiah and Mustaffa, 2013) . The phytochemical screening results show the presence of different compounds in all the eight plants along with Curcuma longa that is similar to the result of former workers (Sawant and Godghate, 2013).…”

“…Other parts of the banana plant also have potential use in medical foods. For example banana leaf extracts from different species of Musa bananas have anti-bacterial activities, with Musa paradisiaca followed by Musa acuminata being the most active against multi-drug resistant nosocomial infection causing pathogens [29]. Musa paradisiaca species also demonstrates anti-bacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus [17] and anti-coccidial activity in chickens [30].…”
