The present work describes radiation-induced effects on vegetative, reproductive traits and psoralen content in Psoralea corylifolia L. The effects of gamma radiation on Psoralea seeds were investigated by exposing seeds with doses of 2.5, 5, 10, 15 and 20 kGy at dose rate of 1.65 kGyh -1 and studying the plant growth at three developmental stages: preflowering, flowering and post flowering (seed to seed) after irradiation. Irradiation with lower doses of gamma rays significantly improved vegetative traits while higher doses proved depressing for same parameters. Similar trend was followed in reproductive traits. Psoralen, showed highest concentration in seeds (7.56%) at 20 kGy and lowest in control roots (0.23%). Increment in psoralen was striking for higher gamma doses applied. These long-term changes in plant development may be attributed to alteration in plant genome induced by irradiation. The results show in depth development stimulation and enhancement of secondary metabolite in Psoralea corylifolia L. following low and high dose treatment respectively depicting the potential of gamma rays in plant biotechnology and metabolomics.

To determine the effects of gamma radiation on the photosynthetic pigments, sugar content and total carbon gain, seeds of Cullen corylifolium (L.) Medik. were irradiated with variable doses (0, 2.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20 kGy) at the rate of 1.65 kGy h -1 from 60 Co gamma source. Cullen corylifolium represents an important Chinese medicine with adequate levels of secondary metabolites, thus we hypothesized that gamma irradiation could modulate primary metabolites which could supplement secondary metabolite levels. The seeds were then transferred to field for biochemical analysis at different developmental stages; pre-flowering, flowering and post-flowering. Gamma dosage at 10 kGy resulted in a significant increase in concentration of chlorophyll a (61.17%), chlorophyll b (93.18%) and total chlorophyll (71.66%), suggesting that low doses of radiation could activate photosynthetic pigment system while at 15 and 20 kGy dose resulted in depletion of such parameters. Sugar and total C analysis of plants irradiated at 10 kGy demonstrated significantly maximum (216.01%) sugar content in leaves at all developmental stages and significantly minimum (46.13%) and (57.81%) in plants raised from seeds irradiated at 15 and 20 kGy respectively. Effective stimulatory dose for C. corylifolium '11062' is 10 kGy. In contrast, the carotenoid content of the plants exposed to 15 and 20 kGy was maximum than control. Significance of such stimulation correlated with increasing C mass of the plant concerned is discussed in the light of newer aspects in research.

This study was made to investigate the anti-diabetic and antioxidant potential of ethanolic extract of seeds of Psoralea corylifolia L. in streptozotocin (STZ) nicotinamide induced type-2 diabetic rats. Male Albino Wistar rats (150-250 g) were taken for the study. The ethanolic extract of seeds of Psoralea corylifolia was prepared and the oral administration of this extract tested for anti-hyperglycemic activity in streptozotocin-nicotinamide induced diabetic rats showed significant effect on blood glucose level in acute and chronic study. The body weight, oral glucose tolerance test and biochemical parameter such as insulin level, liver glycogen contents, glycosylated hemoglobin, total plasma cholesterol and antioxidant parameters were estimated for all treated group and compared against diabetic control group. In oral glucose tolerance test both dose (200 and 400 mg/kg) intensively reduced external glucose level. After 28 days (chronic study) of treatment with extract the maximum reduction in blood glucose level were observed in streptozotocin-nicotinamide rats with ethanolic extract 400 mg/kg body weight per os. There were significant increase in body weight, liver glycogen content, plasma insulin level and decrease in the blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin level and total plasma cholesterol. However it also influences on the antioxidant parameters like decreases malondialdehyde (MDA) level and increases reduced glutathione (GSH) level. This investigation results that Psoralea corylifolia has significant anti-hyperglycemic and antioxidant activity.
