The potential of a plant with medicinal and nutritional properties, Anredera cordifolia, is reviewed. Its common names include “Bertalha” and “folha gorda” and it is popularly used for wound healing and against fungal infections and other types of infection. Its pharmacological properties have been widely investigated and acknowledged, especially with regard to its antibacterial activity, which improves the healing of wounds infected by Staphylococcus aureus, and to its antifungal activity against Candida albicans. It is an unconventional food plant, with leaves and aerial tubers used as food prepared in varied ways. It is also considered an invasive plant in several countries and thus classified as a weed. Its characteristics of a Brazilian native plant, with proven medicinal properties and unconventional use as food, underlie our study on its ecology and botanical classification, as well as the pharmacological assays and screening of chemical constituents.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendokumentasikan tanaman obat lokal yang dipergunakan untuk peningkatan produktivitas dan kesehatan ternak ruminansia di Bengkulu. Data diperoleh melalui wawancara terhadap 75 petani di Bengkulu, semi stuktur quisioner dipergunakan sebagai pedoman untuk bertanya seperti nama tanaman yang dipergunakan, bagian yang dimanfaatkan, cara penggunaannya, dan termasuk bahan lain yang ditambahkan. Setiap tumbuhan yang disebut oleh responden dicatat nama lokal untuk identifikasi nama ilmiahnya. Pada penelitian ini studi literatur dipergunakan untuk mengetahui nama ilmiah/latin dan untuk mengetahui kandungan fitokimianya. Data dianalisis secara deskripstif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan tercatat ada 33 medicinal herbs yang dipakai oleh petani peternak, tanaman tersebut masuk dalam 16 genus dan 14 famili. Medicinal herbs dari famili Zingiberaceae yang terdiri dari 7 species merupakan tanaman yang paling banyak dimanfaatkan, sedangkan 13 famili yang lain diwakili 1 species setiap familinya. Curcuma longa Linn dan Curcuma domestica merupakan medicinal herbs yang paling banyak dipergunakan untuk meningkatkan nafsu makan, mencegah penyakit, bloat, infestasi parasit internal, dan luka. Pemberian tanaman obat secara per oral merupakan metode yang paling banyak dipergunakan diikuti dengan cara topikal. Nama ilmiah dan komponen fitokimia dipelajari berdasarkan studi literatur. Medicinal herbs yang dipergunakan oleh petani peternak kebanyakan merupakan kitchen herbs dengan demikian tanaman ini relatif aman untuk ternak ruminansia.

Background: the current research studies why it is effective using Anredera cordifolia, Psidium guajava, and Pogostemon cablin by the local community as a traditional medicine for diarrhea treatment caused by Escherichia colibacteria. Objectives: We compared the inhibitor effectiveness of three leaf extracts against Escherichia coli; we also identified the anti-bacterial substances contained in leaf extracts. Methods: We determined the bacterial test activity using the "agar diffusion" method and the thin layer chromatography (TLC) as qualitative analysis for determining the anti-bacterial substances contained in the extract. Results: The Pogostemon cablin leaf extract contained terpenoids, phenolic, and flavonoids compound as bacterial inhibitors, and the comparison showed that Pogostemon cablin leaf extract had the greatest bacterial inhibition power. Conclusion: The antibiotic substances found in the leaf extracts of Anredera cordifolia, Psidium guajava, and Pogostemon cablin can be used as traditional medicine. The breakthrough was evidenced by the ability to inhibit Escherichia coli bacteria. This research shows that traditional medicine has ancient knowledge used by this paper
