Antibacterial properties of propolis and products containing propolis from Brazil

Abstract: Summary — Crude propolis and commercial products containing propolis, such as ethanolic extracts, tablets, capsules and powders acquired in São Paulo City (Brazil) were analyzed. The resins of the solid products were extracted with ethanol and found to be present at various concentrations, independently of the propolis concentration specified on the label of the commercial products. The in vitro activity of these resins against S aureus, B cereus and B subtilis was also determined. The results showed tha… Show more

“…Owing the ability to synthesize many different substances, the propolis is one of the top richest sources of new drugs (1,11). It is showed that ethanol extract of propolis has a high potential as an alternative source of antibacterial compounds (2,3,4,5,13,19,20,22,33).…”

“…The biological activities of propolis include antibacterial (Christov, Bankova, Tsvetkova, Kujumgiev, & Tejera, 1999;Grange & Darvey, 1990;Kujumgiev, Bankova, Ignatova, & Popov, 1993;Menezes, Bacci, Oliveria, & Pagnocca, 1997), antifungal (Cafarchia, de Laurentis, Milillo, Losacco, & Puccini, 1999;Millert-Clerc, Michael, Simeray, & Chaumont, 1987), antiviral (Amoros, Sauvager, Gire, & Cormier, 1992), antiptotozoan (Higashi & Castro, 1994;Scheller, Szaflarski, Tustanowski, Nolewajka, & Stojko, 1977), antitumoural (Banskota et al, 2001;Mahmoud et al, 2000), antiinflammatory (Banskota et al, 2001;Dobrowolski et al, 1991), immunomodulation (Dimov, Ivanovska, Bankova, Nikolov, & Popov, 1992) and other therapeutic properties (Cheng & Wong, 1996;Marcucci, 1995). For this reason, propolis is extensively used prevent disease such heart disease, diabetes, and cancer (Kumazawa, Hamasaka, & Nakayama, 2004).…”
