Antibiotic resistance among Escherichia coli isolates from stool samples of children aged 3 to 14 years from Ujjain, India

Abstract: BackgroundAntibiotic resistance is a major global public health concern, particularly in settings where few treatment options are available. Limited research has been done on antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli of Indian children at community level. Therefore we studied antibiotic resistance patterns in E. coli isolates from stool samples of children aged 3-14 years from Ujjain, Central India, to investigate associations of resistance with demographic variables.MethodsChildren, 3-14 years of age, were in… Show more

“…In the study it was observed that antibiotic resistance rates of E. coli isolated from stool samples were higher in children lives in rural and have mothers with low level education than children lives in city and have mothers higher level education. The study also indicated that ESBL rate was low (9%) (1). Another result that obtained in this present study should be underlined although the less number of participants, quinolone resistance was observed in children.…”

“…Resistance to antibiotics is also a growing public health issue. A study in Ujjain revealed that 72% of children have Escherichia coli resistant to at least one antibiotic [22]. Additionally, in this same study, multidrug resistance was identified in 33% of the samples.…”

“…Moreover, it could be due to self-medication by using experience, instructions from veterinary input shops or instructions on the label of the respective medicine, a practice that may not always result in the correct treatment of the disease. Since in Tanzania, antibiotics are sometimes sold without prescriptions (Van de boogard et al, 2011), the observed resistance could be due to increased use of antibiotics, especially the first line antibiotics which are cheap and easily accessible (Shakya et al, 2013). The susceptibility profile of E. coli to different antibiotics has been summarised in Figure 1 below.…”
