Anticancer activity of cissampelos pareira against dalton′s lymphoma ascites bearing mice

Abstract: Background:Cissampelos pareira (Menispermaceae) is used in folk Indian system of alternative medicine, for its analgesic, antipyretic, diuretic, antilithic, and emmenagogue properties. Objective:To evaluate Cissampelos pareira (C. pareira) for in vitro cytotoxicity and in vivo antitumor activity against Dalton's Lymphoma Ascites (DLA) cells in Swiss mice.Materials and Methods:Cissampelos pareira was successively extracted using different solvents. In vitro cytotoxicity was assessed by the MTT assay. An in vivo … Show more

“…Cucurbitacins E, I and Q have been shown to possess antitumor and antidiabetic activities 3540 . C. pareira contains a substantial amount of cucurbitacin Q as found in our study and this concurs with the antiproliferative potential of the plant 30,41 . This does not signify that the anticancer potential of this plant is only due to the presence of a large amount of cucurbitacin Q as it requires further studies.…”

“…This plant is rich in alkaloids and finds some uses in the Indian and Chinese medicine. Many alkaloids from this plant exhibit cytotoxic 23,30 , anti-inflammatory 20 , antiplasmodic activities and this is why it has gained some attention as a natural remedy for malaria in Kenya due to its antimalarial properties 31 . Although this plant is well-known for its alkaloidal content, our research group recently isolated cucurbitacins F and Q from this plant.…”

“…They found that at 200 and 400 mg/kg dose levels of C. pareira, cholesterol level declined and the triglyceride level was elevated (Surendran et al, 2011). Meanwhile, Thavamani et al (2014) reported that the methanolic extract of C. pareira decreased both cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in Dalton's lymphoma ascites bearing mice.…”

“…Cancer is a major health issue in almost every part of the world. There is a need for development of new effective anticancer agents as the cancer treatment methods like chemotherapy and radiation therapy pose several side effects [1]. Hence, presently, natural products have been explored and investigated for the development of potent anticancer agents bearing potent antioxidant activity and minimum toxicity to the host cell [2].…”
