Anticancer activity of Pupalia lappacea on chronic myeloid leukemia K562 cells

Abstract: BackgroundCancer is one of the most prominent human diseases which has enthused scientific and commercial interest in the discovery of newer anticancer agents from natural sources. Here we demonstrated the anticancer activity of ethanolic extract of aerial parts of Pupalia lappacea (L) Juss (Amaranthaceae) (EAPL) on Chronic Myeloid Leukemia K562 cells.MethodsAntiproliferative activity of EAPL was determined by MTT assay using carvacrol as a positive control. Induction of apoptosis was studied by annexin V, mit… Show more

“…G2/M arrest and a marked increase in apoptotic rate were noted in neuroblastoma LAN-5 cells [ 24 ]. Rutin present in ethanolic extract of aerial parts of Pupalia lappacea also exerted effects on leukemia K562 cells by functionalizing intrinsic pathway mediated apoptosis [ 25 ]. Extract of Cyrtosperma johnstonii contains rutin as a bioactive ingredient and has potent biological activity against small cell lung carcinoma cells as evidenced by cell cycle arrest and apoptosis [ 26 ].…”

“…Late apoptotic cell exhibited cytoplasmic blebbing and irregularity in shape apoptotic bodies. In the same way, Pupalialappacea, containing flavonoid rutin as the main component, caused the morphological changes in K562 cell by cell shrinkage and membrane blebbing when treated with the extract for 24 h (Ravi et al 2012).…”

“…A wide variety of human disorders is currently being treated with the use of plant materials due to their decreased toxicity levels, cost-effectiveness as well as minimized side effects in order to avoid drug resistance caused by pharmacological agents [61][62][63].…”

“…Plants and herbs are persistently being studied for the identification of novel therapeutic agents. Among the 250,000 higher plant species on earth, more than 80,000 plants have medicinal values [62]. Herbal medicine is still the mainstay of about 75-80% of the global population, mainly in developing countries, for primary health care because of better cultural acceptability, better compatibility with the human body and lesser side effects.…”
