With the COVID-19 pandemic confronting health systems worldwide, medical practitioners are treating a myriad of physical symptoms that have, sadly, killed many thousands of people. There are signs that the public is also experiencing psychological trauma as they attempt to navigate their way through the COVID-19 restrictions impinging on many aspects of society. With unprecedented demand for health professionals' time, people who are unable to access face-to-face assistance are turning to smartphone apps to help them deal with symptoms of trauma. However, the evidence for smartphone apps to treat trauma is limited, and clinicians need to be aware of the limitations and unresolved issues involved in using mental health apps.

Depression is the most common and widespread psychiatric disorder severely affecting people's lives at all ages. Factors from social, psychological, and biological aspects can contribute to depression, and many hypotheses are associated with biological factors involved in the aetiology of depression such as genes and neurotransmitters. As three monoamine neurotransmitters, dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, are involved in the regulation of mood and motivation in emotion and reward system, the dysfunction of neurotransmitters of depressive patients can lead to their abnormal symptoms. This paper will discuss how the behaviour of these neurotransmitters has helped develop antidepressant drugs for treating depression. Although helpful, antidepressant drugs have other negative health outcomes on users such as side effects. Research on antidepressants has led to the development of new drugs such as nasal spray and skin patch which has shown to alleviate symptoms of depressive patients. Current treatments with a potential reduction of side effects are suggested on new applications for improving public health condition. Furthermore, other non-medical factors such as social engagement and physical activity are also involved in treating depression.

Ovarian Gene Transcriptional Responses To Antidepressant Drugs (Imipramine And Fluoxetine) In Female Wistar Rats

This study was designed to investigate ovarian gene transcriptional responses to selected antidepressant drugs (imipramine and fluoxetine) in female rats. Fifteen female rats (120 – 140 g) were used for this study. Imipramine (0.71 mg/kg) and fluoxetine (0.57 mg/kg) were given orally for 50 days. The method of RT-PCR was employed to investigate the expressions of FSH-R, p53 and Bcl-2 genes. Graphics were generated as mean +/- SEM using GraphPad Prism version 8.0. Results of the study revealed that the FSH-R, p53 and Bcl-2 expressions were significantly (p<0.05) up-regulated in the imipramine-treated rats relative to their controls. Conclusively, it can be suggested that imipramine induced follicular growth and apoptosis in female Wistar rats.
