Antidermatophyte and antimelanogenesis compound from Eleutherine americana grown in Indonesia

Abstract: An active compound from the bulb of Eleutherine americana L. Merr. (Iridaceae) collected from East Kalimantan, Indonesia, was tested for its antidermatophyte and antimelanogenesis activity. Antifungal assay-directed fractionation of the n-hexane-soluble fraction of the methanolic extract of the bulb of E. americana led to the isolation of 1 as an active compound. The compound was identified as the naphthoquinone eleutherin by EI-MS and (1)H-, (13)C-, and two-dimensional NMR analyses. Antidermatophyte assay of … Show more

“…Plant extracts were dissolved in acetone to obtain a concentration of 40, 60, and 80 μg/10 μL, which was selected on the basis of our preliminary results showing the antimicrobial activity of plant extract tested simultaneously to correlate with the concentration of standard drugs used (10−20 μg/disk). Antimicrobial assays were conducted using the disc diffusion method as previously described by Kusuma et al [6]. Zones of inhibition around the discs were measured in mm.…”

“…Eleutherol is a napthofuran, one of its derivatives eleutherine showed interesting inhibitory activity against human topoisomerase II, and compounds with this action can be considered as part of first-line chemotherapy for a wide variety of tumors (Kusuma et al, 2010).…”

“…The development of microbial resistance to presently available antibiotics has led to the search for new antimicrobial agents [16]. Due to the problem of microbial resistance to antibiotics, attention is given toward biologically active components isolated from plant species commonly used as herbal medicine, as they may offer a new source of antimicrobial activities [17].…”
