“…Many of the medical effects, such as immuno-stimulation, promotion of wound healing, and antibiotic protection, as well as anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, and anti-oxidant effects of Aloe leaves have been investigated (8). In particular, the anti-diabetic effects of Aloe vera gel have been well studied both in humans (11,12) and streptozotocin-induced animal diabetes models (13,14,34).…”

“…whole plant or from some of its components is scanty and only a recent cause of interest (Gutterman & Chauser-Volfson 2000;Beppu et al 2006;Shin et al 2011;Misawa et al 2012). No information is available on the fate of active components from Aloe spp.…”

“…The hypoglycemic activity of Aloe species was first demonstrated by Agrawal (1985). Since then, the antidiabetic effects of Aloe preparations have been demonstrated in diabetic patients Ajabnoor 1990;Bunyapraphatsara et al, 1996;Yongchaiyudha et al 1996), and in alloxan-or streptozotocin-induced diabetic animal models (Beppu et al, 1993;Rajasekaran et al, 2004Rajasekaran et al, , 2005Rajasekaran et al, , 2006Beppu et al, 2006). A. vera gel was administered to STZ-induced diabetic rats decreased fasting blood glucose levels and improved the levels of the antioxidant enzyme (Nwanjo, 2006); moreover aqueous extract prevented the onset of hyperglycaemia in alloxan-induced diabetic rabbits (Akinmoladun and Akinloye, 2007) ) and aloe-emodin (3.6 mg g -1 ) was administered to insulin resistant mice for 4 weeks improved insulin tolerance and fasting blood glucose levels (Perez et al,2007).…”
