Antifertility and antimicrobial studies of pharmaceutically important organolead(IV) complexes of phenanthrolines

Abstract: The present study deals with a brief description of antifertility and antimicrobial aspects along with the spectral characterization of lead(IV) complexes. The testicular sperm density, testicular sperm morphology, sperm motility, density of cauda epididymal spermatozoa and fertility in mating trails and biochemical parameters of reproductive organs of an interesting class of biologically potent complexes on male albino rats at the dosages have been examined and discussed. Lead(IV) complexes have been synthesi… Show more

“…This is supported by upward shift in m(C-N) to the extent of 10-30 cm -1 . The FTIR spectra of metal chelates contained new bands in the 530-542 cm -1 range, assigned to (Pb / N), and in the 455-470 cm -1 range, assigned to (Pb-O) [34,35]. The disappearance of a band due to m(C=O) and appearance of new bands at 1550-1570 and 1365-1370 cm -1 assignable to m(NCO -) [36] are indicative of deprotonation of the NH proton and bonding through the imidolate oxygen.…”

“…The LD 50 (Table 4) is statistically derived single dose of a substance that can be expected to cause death in 50% of the animals. [45] In a prohibited analysis method of LD 50 , the selected dose levels should bracket the expected LD 50 value with at least one dose level higher than the expected LD 50 but not causing 100% mortality and one dose level below the expected LD 50 but not causing 0% mortality. Toxicity of the complexes was determined by calculating the LD 50 values.…”

“…So the development of a suitable alternative is an urgent global need. Many novel compounds that have antifertility and possible antimicrobial effects are currently being developed and tested (Chaudhary et al 2007). However, substantial challenges remain before a new contraceptive microbicide product will be available for distribution.…”
