Swietenia mahagoni (L.) Jacq. belongs to the Meliaceae family and it is native to the West Indies. It was introduced to India in 1975 and now grown in any parts of India. Biological activities of the plant are due to the abundance of phenolic compounds including different terpenoids and limonoids. The plant possesses various secondary metabolites which are responsible for its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-malarial, anti-diabetic antioxidant, anti-ulcer, anti-viral, anti-diarrhoeal, anti-pyretic and antiinflammatory properties. This antimicrobial activity encouraged to work on identification of phytochemical and antimicrobial investigation of this herbal plant. The seeds and barks of Swietenia mahagoni is subjected to phytochemical screening for secondary metabolites and disk diffusion method for its antimicrobial activity against standard MTCC strains, two bacteria namely Staphylococcus aureus (gram+) (MTCC no. 6908), Escherichia coli (gram-) (MTCC no. 77) and one fungus Aspergillus niger (MTCC No.1344) were used for the study. The qualitative phytochemical tests reveal the presences of phytocompounds including alkaloids, terpenoids, tannins, and glycosides as major active constituents. The seed and bark extracts exhibit positively significant antimicrobial activity against the standard strains. The fungal activity was good in seed extracts, and bacterial activity was significant in bark extracts.

This work has been carried out to use clove leaf oil as a composite coating component having anti-fungal properties. The mushroom growth testing was carried out with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) testing with variations in concentrations of 0%, 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, up to 1% and obtained MIC values of clove oil found at a concentration of 0.4% in inhibiting the growth of white-rot fungi. Ganoderma lucidum mushroom is used as a weathering fungus applied in composites. The results of SSD testing showed that the growth of Ganoderma lucidum fungus began to be inhibited in composites coated with clove oil with a concentration of 0.6%.FTIR testing showed the presence of hydroxyl group (O-H), methylene group (C-H), alkenyl (C=C), and aromatic ring (C=C-C), GC-MS test results showed clove oil containing 67.40% eugenol, 17.42% beta-caryophyllene, 2.91% isopropenyl acetate, 1.56% caryophyllene oxide and 0.91% alpha-copaene. Based on research data, it shows that clove leaf oil can be used as an anti-fungal coating component in composites.

The curing of raw hides and skins using sodium salt is a widely recognized technique, although it has negative consequences on the environment by elevating water salinity and introducing a significant amount of Total Dissolved Solid (TDS). In order to tackle this issue, goat skin was conserved through the utilization of a mixture consisting of crushed sky fruit seeds and sodium salt. Various ratios of mixture were tested on raw goat skin, and the optimal outcome was achieved by utilizing a blend consisting of 10% seed crush and 10% sodium salt, based on the weight of the raw skin. The experimental specimen effectively endured a month-long continuous evaluation of preservation-related variables such as odor, hair loss, shrinkage temperature, moisture level, and bacterial population during the trial period. The experimental sample and the sample preserved according to conventional methods were subjected to the standard leather processing technique. The liquor from both samples was analyzed to confirm the impact of environmental factors on preservation. The results of the experiment indicate 59% decrease in the levels of total dissolved solids (TDS) and 44% reduction of chloride (Cl−) content. The processed leather samples were assessed for their quality through the analysis of their physical properties and fiber structure using a scanning electron microscope (SEM).
