Antifungal derivatives from Piper mollicomum and P. lhotzkyanum (Piperaceae)

Abstract: Recebido em 28/7/06; aceito em 9/3/07; publicado na web em 24/7/07Bioguided fractionation of the extracts from leaves of Piper mollicomum and Piper lhotzkyanum against the fungi Cladosporium cladosporioides and C. sphaerospermum afforded seven bioactive compounds, four being chromenes: methyl 2,2-dimethyl-2H-chromene-6-carboxylate, methyl 8-hydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-2H-chromene-6-carboxylate, 2-methyl-2-[4'-methyl-3'-pentenyl]-2H-1-benzopyran-6-carboxylic acid, 2,2-dimethyl-2H-chromene-6-carboxylic acid, one a dihy… Show more

“…Compound 29 gave an MAR of 1.0 μg against both C. sphaerospermum and C. cladosporioides , the same MAR generated by the positive control nystantin, while Compound 30 afforded MAR of 1.0 and 5.0 μg, respectively [9]. Compound 29 was also isolated as an antifungal constituent from P. lhotzkyanum [10] and P. marginatum [11]. The analog 5,7-dihydroxy-4′-methoxyflavanone ( 31 ) isolated from P. marginatum [11] also demonstrated the same antifungal activity as sakuranetin against the aforementioned two fungal pathogens.…”

“…Studies of Piper species have revealed the presence of several classes of secondary metabolites, 1 including alkaloids, amides, 2-6 chromenes, 7,8 neolignans, 9 lignans, terpenes, 10,11 benzoic acid derivatives 12,13 and kavalactones.…”

“…A Piper mollicomum pertence à família Piperaceae e é conhecida como "jaborandi-manso" ou apenas "jaborandi" (Peckolt & Peckolt, 1888). Poucos estudos fitoquímicos foram realizados com a P. mollicomum, entre eles a análise da composição do óleo essencial, mostrando que é composto principalmente por sesquiterpenos (Santos et al, 2001), e o isolamento de dois cromenos e uma chalcona com atividade antifúngica (Lago et al, 2007).…”
