Antihyperglycaemic potential of rosmarinic acid attenuates glycoprotein moiety in high-fat diet and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Abstract: Rosmarinic acid is a polyphenolic phytoconstituent isolated from the leaves of Plectranthus amboinicus and its structure was established by analysis of its 1 H, 13 C and HRMS. The effect of rosmarinic acid was evaluated by deranged plasma and tissues glycoprotein components in diabetic rats. Rosmarinic acid was administered to diabetic rats for 30 days significantly declined the levels of blood glucose and glycosylated haemoglobin with elevation of plasma insulin and haemoglobin levels. Rosmarinic acid adminis… Show more

“…For diabetic complications, vanillic acid ameliorated diabetic liver dysfunction by lowering the levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). It also decreases the levels of urea, uric acid, and creatinine in kidney [106]. Protocatechuic acid and rosmarinic acid reduce histological changes in kidney tissues in diabetic nephropathy animals [103,107].…”

“…Methyl caffeate and rosmarinic acid could protect islet β-cells [96]. Ferulic acid and rosmarinic acid also have anti-glycation effects to decrease the formation of AGEs [95,106]. For diabetic complications, vanillic acid ameliorated diabetic liver dysfunction by lowering the levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT).…”

“…Group I (NC): rats received a standard diet (3% fat, 54% carbohydrate, 26% protein, 17% vitamins, and minerals with a total energy of 14.43 kJ/g) and water, while 28 rats were fed a high‐fat diet (HFD) with a total energy of 25.07 kJ/g containing 60% fat, 20% carbohydrate, and 20% protein for consecutive 4 weeks. After fasting overnight, HFD‐fed rats obtained a single intraperitoneal streptozotocin (STZ), 35 mg/kg body weight, freshly prepared in citrate buffer (0.05 M, pH 4.5) (Ramalingam et al, 2020). The level of the blood glucose was tracked 3 days later using a glucose meter (Accu‐Chek® Aviva, Roche Diagnostics, India).…”

“…RA was also reported to induce glucose-lowering effect in STZ-induced diabetic rats by stimulating the surviving β-cells of the islets of Langerhans to secrete more insulin. It also reduced insulin resistance measures, indicating that the antioxidant capacity of RA helps to restore insulin sensitivity (Ramalingam et al., 2020 ).…”
