Antihyperlipidemic Activities and Hematological Properties of Ethanol Extract of Blighia Sapida Koenig Bark in Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Rats

Abstract: Blighia sapida (BS) has been shown to be rich sources of antioxidant, thus, we evaluated effects of B. sapida Koenig stem bark ethanol extract (BSE) on lipid metabolism and hematological indices in diabetes rats. Thirty male rats were divided into six groups of five rats each. Diabetes was elicited by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan (65 mg/kg body weight) once and orally administered with glibenclamide (5 mg/kg), B. sapida extract (50, 100 and 150 mg/kg body weight (bw) once daily for 21 days. Serum lipid… Show more

“…Dyslipidemia, increments in the concentrations of TC, TG, and alterations in lipoprotein components, is a recognized challenge in diabetic patients 41 , 42 . Also, the high concentrations of LDL-c and AI induced by alloxan imply a propensity for cardiovascular issues 42 .…”

“…Also, the high concentrations of LDL-c and AI induced by alloxan imply a propensity for cardiovascular issues 42 . The increased levels of TC in diabetic animals are due to the inactivation of lipoprotein lipase 41 , 42 . The ability of AEPAS to restore the deranged metabolic pathways could be the result of lipase inhibition via insulin and a subsequent reduction in the rate of lipid degradation, biotransformation of free fatty acids to phospholipids.…”

“…To reduce the global burden of diabetes mellitus (DM), researchers are searching for newer therapies, especially the use of natural plants, which are readily available and pose fewer or no side effects ( Balogun and Ashafa 2017 ). Some drugs used in treating diabetes are known to have limited efficacy over time ( Ojo O. A. et al, 2020 ).…”
