Antihypertensive effect of carvacrol is improved after incorporation in β‐cyclodextrin as a drug delivery system

Abstract: Hypertension is a major public health concern globally and a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). 1 The number of hypertensive adults increased from 594 million in 1975 to 1.13 billion in 2015, mainly in low-income and middle-income countries. 2 Moreover, in Brazil, approximately one quarter of the adult population are reported to have hypertension. 3 Globally, CVD was responsible for approximately 17.5 million deaths in 2012. If current trends continue, the annual number of deaths will increase to 2… Show more

“…The most used Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) codes ( Figure 3 ) are for the treatment of diseases affecting the nervous system, as expected from the used keywords, but also cardiovascular diseases, which can be due to the association between cardiovascular diseases and the inflammatory response [ 101 ]. Most patents focus on combining ALA with other drugs in pharmaceutical preparations.…”

“…It must be mentioned that carvacrol possesses various pharmacological properties, especially in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and state-of-the-art studies on its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer properties were recently reviewed [ 111 , 112 ]. In this context were mentioned (`) the anticancer properties in preclinical models of breast, liver, and lung carcinomas, where is acting on proapoptotic processes, (``) the effectiveness against food-borne pathogens as for example Escherichia coli , Salmonella , and Bacillus cereus , (```) the high antioxidant activity especially when it is associated with thymol.…”

“…Terpenophenolic compounds are terpene units consisting of phenol moiety (i.e., aromatic benzene ring with hydroxyl group). Accumulating evidence has shown the role of terpenophenolics in attenuating major risk factors of CVDs, such as high levels of low-density lipoprotein, cholesterol, hyperglycemia, and hypertension [ 9 , 10 , 11 ]. However, clinical trials with plant extract or plant-derived compounds have centered mostly on cancer and neurological diseases, with limited investigations into their cardioprotective effects.…”
