Antihypertensive Effect of Ethanolic Extract from Acanthopanax sessiliflorus Fruits and Quality Control of Active Compounds

Abstract: Acanthopanax sessiliflorus (Rupr. & Maxim.) Seem., which belongs to the Araliaceae family, mainly inhabits Korea, China, and Japan. Traditionally, Acanthopanax species have been used as treatment for several diseases such as diabetes, tumors, and rheumatoid arthritis. Especially, its fruits have many biological functions including antitumor, immunostimulating, antithrombosis, and antiplatelet activities. Recently, the extract of A. sessiliflorus fruit has been reported to have antithrombotic and antiplatelet a… Show more

“…These findings suggest that the increase observed in intracellular NO production via elevated phospho-endothelial NO synthase is the underlying mechanism for this occurrence. The ethanolic extract from Acanthopanax sessiliflorus (Araliaceae) fruits has also been reported to enhance endothelial NO production in cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells and decrease blood pressure in SHR [16]. The increased phosphorylation of endothelial NO synthase in the presence of ASRE has been reported in cultured lymphatic endothelial cells and was also found to ameliorate lower limb edema in healthy volunteers treated with ASRE [17].…”

“…*p < 0.05. effects during a hypertensive state. The ethanolic extract from A. sessiliflorus fruits has been reported to inhibit angiotensin converting enzyme activity, leading to decreased blood pressure in SHR [16]. Administration of the extract (600 mg/kg/d) for 4 wk decreased the blood pressure to levels comparable to those after captopril administration (100 mg/kg/d).…”
