Essential oil was extracted from the leaves of Hyptis suaveolens by hydro-distillation by placing 1kg of the washed fresh leaves in round bottom flasks set up with 1liter distilled water. The Mosquitocidal activity, mosquito larvae (larvicidal) and mosquito repellency effect were carried-out using standard modified methods. Percentage yield of the essential oils was gotten as 0.05%. The essential oil showed very strong larvicidal properties against mosquito larvae. There was low mortality rate at lower dose, at a concentration of 6.25ppm the mortality rate was 4% over a period of 6 hours, same concentration at 12 and 24 hours gave mortality rate of 11%. The LC50 and LC 90 at this concentration were 25.21 and 302.67 respectively. At a concentration of 12.50ppm a mortality rate of 4% was also recorded at 6 hours, at 12 and 24 hours 13% mortality were recorded, and same LC50 and LC90 with 6.25ppm. At concentration of 25.00ppm, 20%, mortality rate was recorded for 6 hours and 30% for both 12 and 24 hours, the LC50 and LC90 are 9.575 and 352.458 respectively. There were no significant differences at 50, 100 and 1000ppm, the mortality rate was 100% for the period of 6, 12 and 24 hours with LC50 and LC90 of 0.549 and 0.853 respectively. There was no record of death in the control even after 24 hours. It was observed that the amount of air that enters and leaves the cage affect the rate at which mosquitoes were repelled. In a group of mosquitoes kept in a cage with all sides open (ASO) 65% of the mosquitoes were repelled within 30 minutes while for one side open (OSO) and all sides closed (ASC), 73% and 85% of the mosquitoes were repelled within the same time frame. In a second experiment, 100% of mosquitoes were repelled from the surface of rats with shaven skin where essential oil was applied. The essential oil also demonstrated dose dependent mosquitocidal activity with LC50 and LC90 values of 6 and 21ppm respectively.

Essential oils were extracted from the leaves of Hyptissuaveolens obtained from Samaru area of Zaria-Kaduna, Nigeria by hydrodistillation. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR)was carried carried-out on the essential oils and the physicochemical properties were determined using standard methods. Percentage yield of the essential oils was gotten to be 0.05.TheGC-MS analysis showed that terpenes are the major organic compound present in the essential oil which was confirmed by FTIR with the O=C-O-Cstretch functional group indicating the presence of terpenes. FTIR analysis shoewed the presences of functional groups such as esters, ethers, carboxylic acids etc which are useful in the making of soap, perfume, anaesthesia and several other things. The physicochemical analysis showedthat the essential oil has the following physicochemical properties; Iodine value 23.59+0.12g/100g, saponification 100.18+0.8mgKOH/g, Peroxide value40.00+0.02meq/kg, Acid value 3.37+0.01mgKOH/g, Ester value 34.30+1.00mg/g and free fatty acids 0.15+0.57%.

The inhibitory potential of Hyptis suaveolens leaf and root extracts on fungi associated with postharvest spoilage of cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) was examined. Collection of diseased cabbage was done in sterile sample bags. Isolation of fungi was carried out by inoculating small sections of diseased tissues excised from the cabbages unto Petri-dishes containing Acidified Potato Dextrose Agar (APDA). The isolated fungi were inoculated in triplicates unto Petri-dishes impregnated with 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% concentrations of leaf and root extracts. Fungi inoculated on PDA alone and PDA impregnated with extraction solvents, served as controls. Diametric growths of the fungi were measured 24 hourly for 10 days after inoculation. Isolated fungi associated with postharvest spoilage in B. oleracea were Aspergillus niger and Rhizopus nigricans. Ethanol root extracts were highly effective as inhibitors of fungal growth. Ethanol leaf and aqueous root extracts only effectively inhibited A. niger growth. Aqueous leaf extracts of H. suaveolens irrespective of concentration did not inhibit growth of either of the fungal species. Generally, inhibition of fungal species growth decreased based on duration of exposure; effects were in the order: Day 5 effects > day 7 effects > day 10 effects. Ethanol and aqueous leaf and root extracts of H. suaveolens possess fungitoxic properties that might be effective as phytofungicides against fungi responsible for postharvest bio-deterioration of B. oleracea. Better understanding of the bioactive components of these natural extracts and more research into how they can be obtained in large quantities and packaged in a form that can be attractive to farmers is needed.
