Antimicrobial Activity of Chitosan/Gelatin/Poly(vinyl alcohol) Ternary Blend Film Incorporated with Duchesnea indica Extract in Strawberry Applications

Abstract: Chitosan (CTS)/gelatin (GEL)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based composite films with different concentrations of Duchesnea indica extract (DIE) (6.25 and 25 mg/mL), an antimicrobial agent, were manufactured using a casting technique. Results indicated that elongation at break decreased as DIE was added at higher concentrations. Composite films showed no significant differences in thickness, tensile strength, and water vapor permeability. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that DIE was successfully incor… Show more

“…In compliance with the antimicrobial properties of anthocyanins and other phytochemicals, with the release of DIE from the film matrix, the film demonstrated a clear inhibitory action on S. aureus, up to 4.9 logs CFU/mL. Such films can be used as a coating material in fresh fruits and vegetables to extend their microbial safety [170]. Additionally, because anthocyanins can change their chemical structures and exhibit different colors depending on pH, anthocyanin-rich films can be used to evaluate the quality of packaged foods [171].…”

“…The peak at 1629 cm −1 could be regarded as an asymmetric stretching vibration of COO − [20]. This peak exhibited a blue shift, suggesting that AFE was effectively bound to the film matrix as its addition increased [24]. The peak at 1024 cm −1 could be attributed to the stretching vibration of C-O.…”

“…In addition, the incorporation of natural extracts and nanomaterials has been investigated in chitosan-based films. The resulting films had improved antimicrobial activity [83], however, the shelf-life results are not conclusive, and it is unclear if the addition of natural extracts or nanoparticles can extend the strawberries' shelf life when compared with chitosan-based films (Table 2) [83,[85][86][87]96].…”
