Antimicrobial assay of combination surfactant irrigant regimen on vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis. An in vitro direct contact test

Abstract: Background:Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are on the rise globally in primary intraradicular infections and resistant to most intracanal irrigants and medicaments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of irrigants and identify a cost-effective regimen to eradicate VRE.Materials and Methods:In this in vitro study irrigants were categorized as primary and surfactant groups with individual concentrations consisting of 10 samples each. Primary irrigants; sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), chlorhexi… Show more

“…22 It has been used as an effective antibacterial agent previously but not as a surfactant alone. 23 Samples pretreated with 1% alkylbenzene sulfonate solution for one minute exhibited reduced contact angle values and interfacial gap width, especially for BioRoot. Alkylbenzene sulfonate belongs to a group of anionic surfactants where sulfonate is the hydrophilic part, which is responsible for reducing the surface tension.…”

“…In the PAC group, the detergent was added to decrease surface tension ( 3 , 10 , 11 ) and increase bactericidal activity, as shown in previous studies in which cetrimide was conjugated with other acids ( 3 , 10 - 12 , 16 ).…”

“…Review of the literature did not find any published studies investigating whether the addition of a surfactant to PA has a positive effect on these properties, including evaluation of the influence of different methods of activating the rinse. Cetrimide (C) or cetrimonium is a cationic surfactant that not only reduces surface tension, but also has bactericidal effects ( 3 , 10 , 11 ), can reduce biofilm mechanical stability ( 12 ), and has residual antimicrobial activity ( 3 ).…”

“…Isolated colonies of these microorganisms were suspended in a sterile saline (0.9% NaCl) solution after being grown aerobically in BHI broth for 24 hr. The cell suspension was adjusted spectrophotometrically at 600 nm to match the turbidity of 0.5 McFarland scale (1.5 × 10 8 colony-forming units (CFU)/mL) [ 1 , 21 ].…”
