Background. Bioceramics need to interact chemically with dentin to exhibit adequate bioactivity.Proper bonding of bioceramics with dentin is of considerable importance. This study aimed to evaluatethe wettability and marginal adaptation of bioceramics after the use of surface-active agents on dentin:%0.5 cetrimide and %1 alkylbenzene sulfonate. Methods. Of ninety maxillary central incisors, 45 teeth were sectioned longitudinally with 45 roothalves randomly assigned to three groups (n=15): group I: no pre-treatment; group II: %0.5 cetrimide;group III: %1 alkylbenzene sulfonate. Then, the samples were subdivided into three subgroups (n=5):subgroup I: MTA; subgroup II: Biodentine, and subgroup III: BioRoot. A controlled-volume dropletof bioceramic material was placed on each root half, which was positioned in a dynamic contact angleanalyzer to record the static contact angle for wettability. The remaining 45 samples were decoronated;the root canals were prepared and randomly categorized, as mentioned above. The root canal surfaceswere treated, filled with the bioceramic material, transversely sectioned, and then each middle sectionwas analyzed microscopically for marginal adaptation. Statistical tests used included post hoc Tukeytests and one-way ANOVA. The level of statistical significance set at %95 (P<0.05). Results. The contact angle values and interfacial gap width values after surface pre-treatment weresignificantly lower when compared to no pre-treatment group (P<0.05). The values were significant for%0.5 cetrimide in the case of Biodentine and %1 alkylbenzene sulfonate in the case of BioRoot (P<0.05). Conclusion. The two surfactants yielded promising results for enhancing the wettability and marginaladaptation of materials to the root dentin, which is required for obtaining an adequate seal, penetration,and bond strength of bioceramics.

Background To evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the following chelating agents against Enterococcus faecalis using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis: 1% peracetic acid (PA), 1% peracetic acid with 0.1% cetrimide (PAC), and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) activated by passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) or with Easy Clean (EC), all followed by 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). Material and Methods A total of 80 permanent human mandibular premolars were randomly divided into eight experimental groups according to the chemical solution and agitation protocol used: Group PA + PUI; Group PA + EC; Group PAC + PUI; PAC + EC; group EDTA + PUI; EDTA + EC, all followed by 2.5% NaOCl; and two control groups with saline solution(NaCl): NaCl + PUI and NaCl + EC. Microbial samples were collected before (S1) and after the irrigation protocol (S2). Intracanal E. faecalis reduction analysis was performed by qPCR. Intragroup analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for paired data, and intergroup analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney U test for independent samples. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results A significant difference was found between S1 and S2 in all groups except NaCl+ EC ( p = 0.1602). Comparison between groups showed that PAC + PUI was significantly different from PA +EC ( p = 0.0448). Conclusions The activated chelating agents were effective against E. faecalis , with significant results compared to the control groups. The peracetic acid with cetrimide activated by PUI showed better results than peracetic acid with EC. Background. Endodontic irrigants are essential for disinfecting the root canal system. None of the currently available irrigants perfume sufficiently. However, most products contain surfactants, which enhance the antimicrobial properties of the irrigants. Objectives. To evaluate the effect of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) surfactant on the antimicrobial activity of chlorhexidine and compare it with that of chlorhexidine (CHX) and Biopure MTAD against Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. Materials and Methods. In this in vitro study, three microorganisms were used (E. faecalis, S. aureus, and C. albicans), and each organism was treated with three different irrigants: 2% CHX, 2% CHX + 0.2% CPC, and 100% Biopure MTAD. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated by direct contact assay for 5 min of contact time. The colony-forming unit per mL was calculated after antimicrobial treatment and 24 hr of incubation at 37°C. The data were statistically analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 22. The Kruskal–Wallis and the multiple Wilcoxon sum rank tests were used. The level of significance was set at 0.05. Results. The result showed a nonsignificant difference between the different irrigants against E. faecalis. Among S. aureus subgroups, 2% CHX was statistically significant and more efficient than MTAD. Among C. albicans subgroups, 2% CHX and combined irrigant (2% CHX + 0.2% CPC) were statistically more efficient than MTAD. The 2% CHX and combined irrigants were equally effective against all the tested microorganisms. Conclusions. All the used irrigants have comparable effects against E. faecalis after 5 min. CHX have a comparable effects to that of the combined irrigant and more efficient against S. aureus than MTAD. CHX and the combined irrigant have potent antimicrobial activity against C. albicans superior to MTAD. CPC surfactant can be used with CHX to overcome its clinical drawbacks or limitations without altering or reducing its antimicrobial activity.
