Antimicrobial efficacy of a new tri-antibiotic combination against resistant endodontic pathogens: An in-vitro study

Abstract: Background: Removal of all the pathogenic bacteria from the root canal system is of prime importance for the success of endodontic therapy. Objective: The study aimed to determine the antimicrobial efficacy of three antibiotics and their new combination against selected endodontic pathogens. Methods: In this in-vitro study, we used bacterial strains associated with the refractory endodontic condition and determined MIC and MBC of Clindamycin (C), Metronidazole (M), Doxycycline (D) as well as their combination … Show more

“…The first and second are inorganic in origin, viz., the conventional and most commonly used ZOE, and calcium hydroxide iodoform (Metapex) [ 31 , 32 ]. The third test material utilized here was the organic excipients matrix incorporated multi-antimicrobial [ 26 , 33 ] novel polymeric gel [ 24 ]. As all of them are from different compositional backgrounds, the physiological responses exerted by the host tissues are bound to be variable.…”

“…The microbiological study will be carried out in two stages. In the first stage, 21 standard aerobic and anaerobic microbial strains obtained from ATCC / MCC laboratories (non-pathogenic standard endodontic microbial strains) will be used for determining potency, antibiotic activity (AST), and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) as well as standardization of all test materials by agar diffusion assay and serial dilution method as well as standardization of test materials dosage [24,25].…”

“…6 The antimicrobial efficacy of Triple Antibiotic Paste was evaluated for its use as root canal filling material with different modifications by various authors. 7,8 In Triple Antibiotic Paste, the antibiotics used are: Ciprofloxacin, metronidazole, and minocycline in 1:1:1 concentration. 9 Ciprofloxacin is a second-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotics active against a broad range of bacteria, especially Enterobacteriaceae and Neisseria.…”
