Berries of Vaccinium meridionale Swartz contain a variety of phytochemicals, which are believed to account for their bioactive properties. The potential of Vaccinium meridionale Swartz pomace as a source of bioactive compounds was investigated. The dietary fiber (DF) content was assessed by the AOAC method, phenolic compounds were characterized and quantified via HPLC-PDA and UPLC-QTOF-MS. The in vitro antibacterial activity was tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The antioxidant properties were assessed by the ORAC and the ABTS assays. The DF content was 52.4 AE 3.7%, phenolic compounds comprised anthocyanins (ACNs) (747.6 AE 167.5 mg cyanidin-3-glucoside/100 g FW), hydroxycinammic acids (HCAs) (229.2 AE 68.4 mg chlorogenic acid equivalents/100 g FW), flavonols (335.0 AE 139.5 rutin equivalents/100 g FW), and procyanidins (PACs) (140.9 AE 33.3 mg cocoa procyanidin equivalents/100 g FW). Staphylococcus aureus was more sensitive than E. coli. The ORAC value was 250.0 AE 32.0 μmol TE/g fresh weight (FW). Results suggest that the residue from V. meridionale S. can be utilized to obtain valuable nutraceuticals for the development of functional foods.

This study aimed to determine the air quality in the community settlements around the Kebon Kongok Dusun Landfill, Suka Makmur Village, West Lombok Regency. The type of research used was an experiment using NA media as a growth medium for bacteria at 3 points passed by garbage trucks in community settlements and 1 point not passed by garbage trucks in the Kebon Kongok landfill area, Suka Makmur Village. Air quality in residential communities around the waste disposal sites (WDS) Suka Makmur Village does not meet the requirements based on the Minister of Health Regulation number 1077 of 2011 concerning the requirements for biological contaminants, namely the germ count of less than 700 CFU/m3. The air quality index is lower than the other points, namely at Point I of 3,779 CFU/m3, because Point I is a sampling location far from garbage trucks going to the TPA. The highest results in this study were obtained at Point IV, which was 6,933 CFU/m3; this was estimated because the sampling location was in a community settlement which was less than 50 meters from the Kebon Kongok TPA gate with active trucks and heavy equipment activity in the TPA. Microscopic observation obtained gram-positive bacteria at all points.

Escherichia coli is a gram negative bacterium which is a normal flora in the digestive tract. In birds, this bacterium causes a disease known as colibasillosis. Antibiotics are generally used, but excessive use will cause residues and antibiotic resistance. To avoid resistance or residue, an alternative treatment is needed. The combination of propolis and ginger extract is very promising to develop because both have a synergistic effect as antimicrobials. The research aims to determine the effect of the combination extract on Escherichia coli bacteria in vitro. We used 8 groups which contain combinations of propolis and ginger extract. We used amoxicillin disk as a positive control, 1% Na CMC as a negative control. The results showed a combination of ginger and propolis extract showed good inhibitory activity against Escherichia coli in all groups> 6mm., and the highest inhibitory activity was K3 (5% propolis combination and 15% ginger extract) with 8.7 mm. The combination of propolis and ginger extract has the potential to be used as an alternative antibiotic to prevent antibiotic resistance from synthetic antibiotics.Keywords: alternative antibiotics, combination extracts, Escherichia coli, ginger, in vitro, propolis
