Antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella isolates in a Spanish hospital

Abstract: We studied 961 clinical Salmonella isolates (one per patient) seen in one Spanish hospital from 1988 to 1991. The incidence of non-Salmonella typhi SalmoneUla infections per 100,000 admissions increased from 3.93 to 5.98. Overall rates of resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and co-trimoxazole were 32, 11, and 2%, respectively. Resistance to chloramphenicol increased from 9 to 16% during the study period, while resistance to each of the other drugs remained stable. Variations related to serogroups were o… Show more

“…faecalis [ 15,161. This incidence will probably increase as the population ages and more people are placed at risk by degenerative valve disease and by sources of infection such as infections of the genitourinary tract [4-61. Oncocytomas are benign neoplasms which arise in various organs, particularly the pancreas, thyroid and adrenals [7,8]. In our case, however, even at the higher concentrations employed, the addition of ceftriaxone to ampicillin did not result in a significant synergism but the combination developed a slow bactericidal effect.…”

“…Many reports indicate that Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium (S. typhimurium) would be either the first or the second nontyphoid Salmonella species identified worldwide (14,20). Many S. typhimurium isolates are resistant to multiple drugs and are most commonly resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulfonamides, and tetracyclines (8,20,31,38,42).…”
