Antimicrobial resistance patterns and characterization of integrons of Shigella sonnei isolates in Seoul, 1999–2008

Abstract: A total of 66 Shigella sonnei isolates from 1999 to 2008 in Seoul was analyzed for their antimicrobial resistance, carriage of integron, and the patterns of Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). A high level of antimicrobial resistance to streptomycin (100%), trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (95%), tetracycline (94%), nalidixic acid (65%), and ampicillin (41%) was observed among S. sonnei isolates. Fourteen profiles of antimicrobial resistance were identified with the most common resistance profile being nalid… Show more

“…Most Shigella strains harbored one or two classes of integrons. The presence of integrons in Shigella species varied in numbers in diverse geographical regions [1], [4], [26], [47], [48]. The apparent correlation between multidrug resistance and presence of integron in the strains was not due to the presence of integrons on conjugative plasmids.…”

“…The dentrogram of all the 76 isolates showed a 65% coefficient of similarity, which shared similar discriminatory power with S . sonnei isolates from other provinces [ 29 , 30 ] and other countries [ 3 , 31 ]. Isolates from close years were almost clustered closely and further divided into sub-clusters based on the region of isolation ( Fig 1 ), indicating the genetic diversity and the genetic changes over the timescales.…”

“…se ha incrementado en los últimos años como viene reportándose en diferentes regiones del mundo (8)(9)(10)(11)26), y se asocia principalmente a mecanismos de resistencia relacionados con la presencia de plásmidos, integrones de clase 1-2 y betalactamasas (27)(28)(29)(30).…”
