Antimicrobial Resistance Phenotypes of ETEC Isolates from Piglets with Diarrhea in North Vietnam

Abstract: Both disk diffusion and broth micro-dilution assays were employed to determine the level of resistance in Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) isolates (n = 170) obtained from preweaning piglet colibacillosis from the two different pig production systems (commercial piggeries and small holder farmers) in Vietnam. Overall, tetracycline, streptomycin, amoxicillin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and chloramphenicol showed markedly higher rates of resistance. Both apramycin and ceftiofur are active against all … Show more

“…These two drugs are commonly used for treating urogenital infections in Vietnam. The resistance pattern resembles that reported in two other Vietnamese studies focusing on community-acquired pneumonia and agricultural animals [ 30 , 31 ]. One explanation for the observed resistance towards ampicillin and sulphametoxazol with trimethoprim is that these two types of antibiotics, in contrast to cephalosporins, quinolones and aminoglycocides, which had all retained their activity, are often bought over the counter without any prescription [ 30 ].…”

“…The classical ETEC type implicated in postweaning diarrhea is characterized by the possession of the K88 CF, but recently, ETEC types possessing the F18 CF and other novel CFs have emerged as porcine pathogens. Complicating the control of this disease is a rapid increase in the percentage of multidrugresistant porcine ETEC strains, which is thought to be due to the extensive use of antibiotics as growth promoters and therapeutic agents (15,41,114). While vaccination strategies have been effective in preventing neonatal diarrhea, those aimed at protecting weaned pigs have had mixed results (49).…”

“…It has high levels of antimicrobial use both in humans and animals and resistance among bacterial pathogens is widespread [1]. Use of antimicrobials in commercial pig production is largely unregulated and access to veterinary advice is limited.…”

“…A total of 97 MDR-ETEC isolates (2001) were obtained from Vietnamese pig faecal samples as described previously [1]. Animals' symptoms were consistent with porcine colibacillosis.…”
