Antimicrobial Strategies in the Prevention of Dental Caries

Abstract: Antimicrobial agents, applied either professionally or delivered from dentifrices or mouthwashes, could reduce caries by controlling plaque formation, suppressing cariogenic species, or by inhibiting bacterial metabolism. Chlorhexidine has proven anticaries activity; other agents might also prevent caries by means of their antiplaque properties. Sugar substitutes stabilize the microflora by reducing the number of acid challenges to plaque and stimulating saliva flow; some also have antimicrobial properties, es… Show more

“…Bis-biguanide chlorhexidine (CHX) is widely used in chemical methods and is a representative antimicrobial with broadspectrum antibacterial activity that is known to act against gram-positive/negative germs, aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms, yeast, and fungi 4,5) . Various products containing CHX (e.g., mouthwashes, gels, and varnishes) can be used to prevent dental disease in orthodontic patients 6) .…”

“…Bis-biguanide chlorhexidine (CHX) is an antimicrobial agent with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity that is known to be effective at inhibiting Grampositive and Gram-negative, aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms, yeast, and fungi 16) . Furthermore, CHX is widely acknowledged as one of the most effective antimicrobial agents due to its superior antiplaque and antigingivitis effects compared with other antimicrobial agents 17,18) . Based on this background, a previous study developed a local DDS for applying CHX to orthodontic patients as an elastomeric 8,19) .…”
