Antinociceptive and wound healing activities of Croton adamantinus Müll. Arg. essential oil

Abstract: Leaves of Croton adamantinus have been used to treat inflammation and skin wounds in the semi-arid area of the Northeast of Brazil. In order to evaluate if the essential oil (EO) was responsible for the claimed activities; antinociceptive, wound healing and antimicrobial tests were carried out. Twenty constituents were identified in C. adamantinus EO by GC-MS, ¹H-NMR and ¹³C-NMR, the major compounds being methyl-eugenol (14.81%) and 1,8-cineol (13.74%). Antinociceptive activity was evaluated by the formalin te… Show more

“…The volatile profile in Table indicates that the ‘velame branco’ honey contained methyl eugenol, a compound that typically provides a ‘clove’, ‘spicy’ and ‘hot’ aroma (http://www.odour.org.uk). Many species of the same genus of ‘velame branco’, such as Croton adamantinus , Croton zehntneri , and Croton malambo , include methyl eugenol as one of the main chemical constituents of their essential oils . The acids in honeys have different aromas that range from spicy to rancid, depending on the length of the carbon chain .…”

“…It has also a broad range of applications in therapeutics and especially used in the folk medicine as a remedy for respiratory problems because of its antiseptic, decongestant and expectorant properties (Juergens et al, 2003). Eucalyptol reduces inflammation and pain when applied topically (Ximenes et al, 2013). The agoniztic action of this compound on TRPM8 channels underlies its cooling action.…”
