Antioxidant activities and phenolic contents of the methanol extracts of the stems of Acokanthera oppositifolia and Adenia gummifera

Abstract: Background: Acokanthera oppositifolia Lam (family: Apocynaceae) is a shrub or small tree with white latex, and the leaves of this plant are used in the form of a snuff to treat headaches and in infusions for abdominal pains and convulsions and septicaemia. Adenia gummifera Harv of the family Passifloraceae is a distinctive woody climber whose infusions are used as emetics and are said to help with some forms of depression. Lipid peroxidation has gained more importance today because of its involvement in pathog… Show more

“…only by a single method; therefore, it is important to employ several accepted antioxidant assays to assess the antioxidant activity of plant extracts (1,28,29,36). In the present investigation, some of the most commonly accepted assays were used to explain the function of antioxidants.…”

“…After the tubes vortexed and waiting for a 40 minute interval, the absorbance of all the samples and standards were measured at 725 nm using a UV-vis spectrophotometer (Cecil, UK). Using the plotted calibration curve, the total phenolic content of the samples was calculated and presented as tannic acid equivalent (TAE) (28,29). All determinations were carried out in triplicates.…”

“…Flavonoids and tannins are phenolic compounds and plant phenolics are also a major group of compounds that act as primary antioxidants or free radical scavengers (Adedapo et al, 2008a, 2008b, Ayoola et al, 2008. Tannins and saponins are also found to be effective antioxidants, antimicrobial, and anti-carcinogenic agents (Lai et al, 2010).…”
