ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF SILK SERICIN FROM SILKWORMBOMBYX MORI

Abstract: This study was conducted to investigate the free‐radical‐scavenging activity and antioxidant activity of silk sericin. Silk sericin was prepared from silkworm Bombyx mori and its ability to scavenge hydroxyl, superoxide and 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals was determined by Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) and ultraviolet spectrophotometry, respectively. The antioxidant activities of the silk sericin, including lipid peroxidation in the linoleic acid system, reducing power and ferrous‐ion‐chelating a… Show more

“…Sericin was indicated to suppress lipid peroxidation and tyrosinase inhibitory activity (Kato et al, 1998). In addition to antioxidant activity and chemopreventive effects of sericin was found (Fan et al, 2009;Zhaorigetu et al, 2003), Silk sericin from silkworm cocoons accelerates the proliferation of mammalian cell line (Terada et al, 2002;Aramwit et al, 2009;Aramwit and Sangcakul 2007). Another study reported anti-cancer effects of sericin in colon cancer (Kaewkom et al, 2012).…”

“…Wu et al (2007) reported that the 50% scavenging activity by DPPH assay of sericin prepared from silk industry wastewater was 31 mg/mL. Fan et al (2009) have also reported that silk sericin does not show only DPPH radical scavenging activity, but also many antioxidative activities, such as hydroxyl and superoxide radical scavenging, lipid peroxidation of linoleic acid, reducing power, and ferrous ion chelating activity.…”

“…Silk contains fibroin, sericin, waxy components, hydrocarbons, pigments, and inorganic substances, which have nutritional value to human skin, such as carotene and linoleic acid (Kotake-Nara et al, 2002). Silk sericin is used as an improving reagent or a coating material for natural and artificial fibers, fabrics, and other articles (Fan et al, 2009). Moreover, it is also a potent natural antioxidant with high reducing power and ferrous ion chelating ability (Fan et al, 2009).…”

“…In addition, various silk proteins have been studied and industrialized as a functional food due to its useful biological activities. It was reported that the Bombyx mori (B. mori) silkworm powders showed an excellent activity of lowering blood glucose levels (Ryu et al, 2002) and silk sericin exhibited a strong antioxidant activity (Fan et al, 2009). Hong et al (2002) investigated the effect of the acid hydrolysate of silk fibroin on obesity using obese mice and found that the body weight was significantly reduced in mice fed with B. mori silk fibroin hydrolysate.…”
