Antioxidant activity of curcuminoids

Abstract: The antioxidant activity of the keto and enol forms of curcuminoids isolated from the roots of Curcuma longa is directly related to CH3O⋯H–O and NOT to CO⋯H–O hydrogen bonds.

“…Curcumin [1,7-bis (4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)hepta-1,6-diene-3,5-dione] is an organic compound from the rhizome of the Indian spice turmeric (Curcuma longa), which is one of the principal ingredients in curry powder [4]. Its wide spectrum of biological activities including antiviral [5], antioxidant [6], neuroprotective [7], antidepressant [8], and anti-inflammatory effects [9]. In addition, curcumin has shown an anti-nociceptive effect in different types of pain, such as inflammatory pain [4,7,10], visceral pain [11], musculoskeletal pain [12], burning pain [13], and neuropathic pain [14][15][16][17].…”

“…Turmeric or natural curcumoids have been reported to have antioxidant [48], anti-inflammatory [49], and antimicrobial activities [50]. CURC has recently shown anti-tumor properties, relying on the inhibition of oncogenic/pro-survival STAT-3 and NF-kB-dependent pathways, of the pro-invasive factor Sp-1, of tumor-associated inflammation [51,52].…”

“…To further investigate the mechanisms at the basis of the down-regulation of the doxorubicininduced Pgp transcription, we focused on three interconnected events elicited by doxorubicin in cancer cells and involved in Pgp up-regulation: The increase in intracellular ROS, and the activation of the transcription factors HIF-1α and NF-kB. Notably, HIF-1α and NF-kB are both Pgp inducers [33,37,38,55] and are activated in response to the increased intracellular ROS [56,57], while CURC is known to prevent oxidative stress [48]. Our data indicated that doxorubicin increased ROS levels, and HIF-1α and NF-kB activity, as expected.…”

“…In these results, the protein and carbohydrate contents are stood, which make turmeric a perfect nutritional alternative to be used as food, in addition to its use as a dye, spice, and flavorings in food preparations [18]. Rajkumari et al published a review in which they highlight that the nutritional value of 16 turmeric species lies in their protein, carbohydrate, and dietary fiber content [33].…”

“…Llano et al have gathered research results on the reaction mechanisms for the antioxidant activity, concluding that there are two possible mechanisms: Hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and single electron transfer (SET). The electronic structure of the molecule could be described by both mechanisms [18]. On the other hand, it has been reported that the plant grown is strongly influenced by the manure in soils.…”
