Antioxidant Activity of Nepeta nuda L. ssp. nuda Essential Oil Rich in Nepetalactones from Greece

Abstract: Essential oils from air-dried leaves and verticillasters of Nepeta nuda ssp. nuda from Greece were analyzed by means of gas chromatography-flame ionization detection and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The dominant constituent in the verticillaster oils was 4aα,7α,7aß-nepetalactone (75.7%). The main metabolites of the leaf oil were 1,8-cineole (16.7%), 4aα,7α,7aß-nepetalactone (24.7%), and caryophyllene oxide (16.3%). The oils were examined for their antioxidant activity. Neutralization of stable 2,2-dip… Show more

“…N. nuda L. subsp. nuda essential oil being rich in 4aβ,7α,7aβ‐nepetalactone and eucalyptol possessed significant DPPH free radical scavenging effect (Gkinis, Bozin, Mimica‐Dukic, & Tzakou, ). On the other hand, Shakeri et al () reported that the essential oil of N. sintenisii Bornm.…”

“…It was documented that nepetalactones were the predominant components responsible for the feline attractant properties of many Nepeta species, such as N. persica, N. pogonosperma, N. racemosa, N. cataria, N. sibirica, N. nuda, N. grandifolia, N. clarkei, N. argolica and N. crassifolia. [34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41] For instance, 4aα,7α,7aβ-nepetalactone (28.8%) and 4aα, 7β,7aα-nepetalactone (11.9%) were reported the major components of Nepeta cataria essential oil. [41] Tittel et al [42] reported that the main constituents of N. cataria var.…”

“…BMT: branchlets of male tree; BFT: branchlets of female tree. (Pérez et al, 2006;Gkinis et al, 2010;Miguel et al, 2010). Although the net effect of all oils at all tested concentrations was inhibitory, such a concentrationdependent dual activity could be hypothesized for some of the constituents of J. oblinga oils which leads to the aforementioned inverse association.…”
