Antioxidant Activity of Natural Products Isolated from Red Seaweeds

Abstract: The present work describes more than 60 natural products from marine red seaweeds (Rhodophyta) and their antioxidant activities. The results indicate that algae belonging to the order Ceramiales, family Rhodomelaceae are the most promising as potential producers of antioxidants. This activity seems to be related to the ability to synthesize polyphenols and their derivatives, as bromophenols.

“…25 Accumulating evidences demonstrate the powerful antioxidant activity of many natural products. 2628 An optimal level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is essential for regulation of cellular processes. However, excessive ROS generation is harmful to biomolecules and induces oxidative stress in various chronic diseases.…”

“…For example, mycosporine-like amino acids isolated from Ahnfeltiopsis devoniensis show antioxidant activity [99]. Moreover, two classes of natural compounds, polyphenols and bromophenols, with known antioxidant activity were isolated from red seaweeds [100]. The ethanolic [101] and methanolic [102] extracts isolated from Gracilaria tenuistipitata showed antiproliferative activity on the oral carcinoma cell line Ca 9-22 by modulating oxidative-stress-induced cell apoptosis.…”

“…From red alga belonging to the family Rhodomelaceae (in the order of Ceramiales), e.g. genera of Rhodomela, Symphyocladia, Polysiphonia, Vetebrata, and Odonthalia, a number of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory bromophenols have been reported (Choi et al, 2018;Gribble, 2015;Jesus et al, 2019;Nogueira et al, 2014;Wang et al, 2013;Wiemer et al, 1991). However, the genus Ceramium which is in the family Ceramiaceae (Ceramiales), has only been investigated cursorily for its natural products.…”
