Antioxidant and anti-adipogenic activities of the nuts of Castanopsis cuspidata var. thunbergii

Abstract: The antioxidant and anti-adipogenic activities of the water extract (WE) and methanol extract (ME) of the shell and kernel of var. (CCT) nuts were evaluated. The shell extracts showed higher DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities (RSAs) than did the kernel extracts. Furthermore, the RSA of the ME was higher than that of the WE, regardless of the part. The total phenolic contents (TPCs) of the ME of the shell and kernel were 71.38 and 10.56 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/100 mg extract, respectively. The … Show more

“…In a previous study, the IC 50 value of 80% ethanol extracts of CSL was 16.26 μg/mL [ 25 ], similar to that of the present study. Youn et al measured the antioxidant activities of a methanol extract of the nuts of CS at a concentration of 50 μg/mL [ 21 ]. DPPH and ABTS activities were 75% and 98%, respectively, with very high antioxidant activities at low concentrations.…”

“…It is known to have antioxidant activity and reduce oxidative stress by decreasing intracellular ROS levels. In addition, CS has high 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) radical scavenging activities [ 21 ]. Its radical scavenging capability prevents lipid peroxidation, cellular DNA damage, and, consequently, apoptosis in lung fibroblasts V79-4 cells treated with H 2 O 2 [ 22 ].…”

“…Hence, reducing the amount of lipids stored in adipocytes is momentous for obesity preventing and treating. Several natural plant extracts and their active ingredients are found to be influential in inhibiting adipogenesis [24] . Some of the latest investigations have indicated the anti-adipogenic roles of natural plants, including Coptidis rhizoma (berberine), green tea (catechin), and red pepper The negative (Con -) and positive (Con + ) controls were preadipocytes treated with 0.1% DMSO.…”
