Antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of kaff maryam (<i>Anastatica hierochuntica</i>) and doum palm (<i>Hyphaene thebaica</i>)

Abstract: ion chelating capacity, and (iii) scavenging of superoxide anion radical. The antimicrobial activity of both plant extracts was evaluated against a panel of microorganisms using the agar disc diffusion method. The total phenolic content (51.97 and 64.9 mg/g dry weight in A. hierochuntica and H. thebaica, respectively) was significantly (p Ͻ 0.05) different. The antioxidant activity increased with an increase in concentration. The plant extracts were more active against Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative… Show more

“…While the antioxidant activity (as ABTS) for whole grain was (19 毺mole/g) [57] , the same range for whole grain (10.8-22.6 毺mole/g) of sorghums was reported [58] . It was also reported by Dicko et al that antioxidant activities ranged from 16 to 80 毺mol/g [59] . It was found that, the antioxidant capacity measured by ABTS assay of non-tannin sorghum grains ranged from 9.7-78.9 毺mol TE/g sample [35] , which was close to 毺mol TE/g sample) as reported [60] .…”

“…After preparing the ABTS radical (7 mM, ABTS was dissolved in 10 mL deionized water), ammonium persulfate solution was prepared (2.45 mM -10 mL). ABTS radical cation was produced by reacting 10 mL of ABTS stock solution with 10 mL of ammonium persulfate and then mixed, homogenized and kept in an amber flask for at least 16 h and protected from light). For the sample, an aliquot of 200 毺L of the radical formed was pipetted and diluted in 10 mL 96曘 ethanol of analysis grade.…”

“…However, the plant extracts were found to be effective against both bacteria (Gram-positive and Gramnegative) and fungi. This sort of activity gives an indication of the presence of antimicrobial compounds with broad spectrum or simply general metabolic toxins [55] . Therefore, extracts of S. dulcis may be helpful in finding antimicrobial compounds.…”
