Antioxidant effects of proanthocyanidin‐rich natural extracts from grape seed and cupuassu on gastrointestinal mucosa

Abstract: Natural proanthocyanidin-rich extracts have an antioxidant effect in the GI tract, acting on absorptive cells and enterohormone-secreting cells, although the effects depend on the dose and period of treatment. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…Grape seeds comprise 38% to 52% of the grape pomace, on a dry mater basis, being characterized as a complex matrix composed of approximately 40% fiber, 16% oil, 11% protein, and other components including phenolic compounds, sugars and minerals . According to the scientific literature, grape seeds are a rich source of natural antioxidants and their extracts have different health benefits …”

“…Health beneficial properties have been proposed for cupuassu, being the antioxidant capacity one of the most studied (Santos et al, 2010;Pinent et al, 2015). Antidiabetic potential was also evaluated and cupuassu fruit showed the most potent inhibition of α-amylase activity among sixteen Brazilian native fruits and six commercial frozen pulps .…”

“…Ex Spreng) Shum. is a native fruit from the Amazon region phylogenetically close to cocoa, which contains flavanols and other phenolic compounds that are known by their antioxidant capacity and by their potent inhibition of α-amylase activity in vitro Pinent et al, 2015). Moreover, the effects of chronic daily intake of cupuassu liquor upon metabolic alterations associated to type1 diabetes or to a high fat diet were recently evaluated, showing improvement of plasma lipid profile, antioxidant defenses and glucose tolerance Rogero, & Genovese, 2013;.…”
