The phytochemical, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory potential of root (ethanol and aqueous) extracts of Combretum glutinosum was investigated in this study. Their antioxidant activity was determined using an in vitro DPPH radical scavenging activity assay. The ethanol extract had the lowest IC50 (0.055 mg/mL), which is comparable to vitamin C. Phytochemical screening of extracts revealed the presence of sterols and polyterpenes, polyphenols, alkaloids, flavonoids, catechin tannins, gallic tannins, saponosides, terpenoids, mucilages, anthocyanins, volatile oils, and cardiac glycosides. The extracts significantly inhibit the development of paw edema induced by carrageenan. Anti-inflammatory studies showed that the inflammation inhibition potential of 200 mg/kg body weight of all extracts was significantly lower than the standard diclofenac (20 mg/kg) in the first hours. At the third hour, the inflammation inhibition potential of ethanolic and aqueous extracts was significantly higher than that of the standard. This study revealed that Combretum glutinosum extracts have anti-inflammatory effects and can act as an effective antioxidant.

Natural extracts are described in the literature as biomolecules that have, among others, antioxidant and photoprotective properties. In addition, other advantages allow its use, such as low toxicity and high biodegradability. The skin is an organ that is constantly exposed to oxidative stress, including ultraviolet (UV) radiation, air pollutants and chemicals. These factors directly lead to premature skin aging. The interest in active substances from Brazilian biodiversity, especially the Caatinga Biome, highlighting the attention and research of the pharmaceutical sector and cosmetic industries, to study the insertion of natural biomolecules of plant origin, to demonstrate to consumers the safety and efficacy of these products. However, the objective of this review is to present plants from the Brazilian Caatinga that have biological activities that act in the preventive process of skin care and that have potential for the production of phytocosmetics. This integrative review was produced through a search carried out from January to April 2022. This bibliographic search was carried out in specialized databases (PubMed, Scopus and Science Direct), the manuscript selection was based on the inclusion criteria: articles with studies of plants collected in the region of the Caatinga Biome for the development or tests for skincare in the cosmetic area (in vivo and/or in vitro) with natural extracts that contain keywords in the title, abstract or full text, in the years between 2010 and 2022. Presenting results for the antioxidant, photoprotective and cytotoxicity assays of plants of the Arecaceae family.

Licania rigida Benth has been evaluated as an alternative drug to treat diseases associated with inflammatory processes. This study evaluated the anti-inflammatory effects of aqueous and hydroalcoholic leaf extracts of L. rigida with inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharides in in vitro and in vivo inflammation models. The phytochemical profile of the extracts, analyzed by ultra-fast liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry, revealed the presence of gallic and ellagic acids in both extracts, whereas isovitexin, ferulate, bulky amino acids (e.g., phenylalanine), pheophorbide, lactic acid, and pyridoxine were detected in the hydroalcoholic extract. The extracts displayed the ability to modulate in vitro and in vivo inflammatory responses, reducing approximately 50% of pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6), and inhibiting both NO production and leukocyte migration by approximately 30 and 40% at 100 and 500 µg/mL, respectively. Overall, the results highlight and identify, for the first time, the ability of L. rigida leaf extract to modulate inflammatory processes. These data suggest that the leaf extracts of this plant have potential in the development of herbal formulations for the treatment of inflammation.
